Elizabeth Tanner

IMG_5598.jpeg

Elizabeth’s current interests are Kusaki zome and weaving.  The first is an ancient Japanese technique of painting watercolour on prepared fabric.  The soy milk solution bath renders the  watercolour pigments permanent and was traditionally used when painting silk for kimono.  Elizabeth uses cotton and paints West Coast scenery or flowers.

The feel of yarn and the variety of texture with the colour combinations possible make weaving intriguing.  The repetitive action is meditative.  This makes weaving a definitive contrast to the immediacy and uncertainty of watercolour
